Extinctions : The Cheetah
According to the laws of biology, the cheetah’s extreme level of inbreeding should already have made it extinct. How has the animal escaped this curse? What miracle has enabled it to flourish in the savannahs of Southern Africa? This episode tells us, and also explains that the jury is still out on its future. One day, we may need to locate a reservoir of cheetah genetic diversity, possibly in a remote region where no one would expect to find a way of saving the marvelous African feline: the high plateaus of Iran. For the first time, Extinctions shows us the forgotten tribe of cheetahs that has remained in Central Asia: 60 animals cut off from the world in scenery of breathtaking beauty.
